As we’ve started to make obvious changes in the way things are set up around here, we’ve discovered that there were a lot of things we were either doing wrong or doing needlessly. We recognize that the world of real video-trading has gone the way of the dodo, now that you can find just about anything you want online via Bittorrent downloads or through DVD box set purchases. Therefore, we’re really putting up this list so we have an online source, accessible from anywhere in the world with an Internet connection.
That doesn’t mean we’re no longer trading, we’d be happy to. It just means that’s no longer our primary purpose.
The immediate changes:
- No more pretty pictures. Not only was it a waste of server space but it only encouraged people to steal our bandwidth by not downloading the images to their own servers. No more of that.
- We’ve gotten rid of a lot of the extraneous information that didn’t add anything. I don’t think anyone needed to know what the quality is for every single item, especially when we just put down “A”.
- We’ve added where the particular series is located in our storage system, just so we can keep better track. As we’ve rebuilt the database, we’ve found that our previous system was wholly inadequate to keeping track of absolutely everything. We’ve found a lot of things that we had that weren’t on our online list, or on our offline list, or both. Hopefully this will help.
As time goes on, we’ll be making some significant changes to the system, graphically and format-wise but at the moment, it’s most important to get the data back online, as practically and accurately as possible. We were trying to correct a Wordpress error today, we did a fresh install of 2.9.2 and discovered, much to our dismay, that *EVERY* backup we’ve done for a year has been corrupt. So we’re back to a database from a year ago and we’ll need to do a complete overhaul from that point on. It allows us to make some changes we’ve wanted to make anyhow, both in the format here and in our physical database system. Since we’ve been replacing a lot of series already, we’re going to re-align all of our books. Currently, we have room for 15,356 discs, so this might take some time.
